Hope it's a very happy one for ya'll - even those who're not reading this.

Benazir's assassination made me really angry with Muslim militants, and I have a big, huge problem with those who oppose freedom of expression, modern education and equal rights for women, so I wish that all those suicidal, murderous types kill themselves at the same time so what's left of Muslims is the peaceful, progressive types who can balance their religion with modern world and emancipation. It'll be very lovely if they (killers) all kill themselves brutally without hurting anyone innocent so the prayer is that they kill themselves in the thick midst of their own kind. If that is not possible then if there were a way to identify murderers publicly so that if the public were not inclined to kill them before the public got killed by them at least the public will know the enemy by name and face.

Benazir you did democracy, women and Islam proud. Rest in peace.

On to the other favorite subject - Indian Press. Thanks to that institution truth gets obscured and obscure stuff becomes news. But it does have its benefits for a few - Ms. Shetty now has an honorary doctorate. And that feels so foolish since for so many years so many of us have slogged through racial discrimination and slurs, and overcome them by the sheer dint of hard work and perseverance. Where was TOI and its ilk and where is it today when in UK someone is called a Paki Bastard or someone is told "go back to your own country"? I know, I know it will be said with this raised awareness of Shilpa Shetty people will be afraid to hurl slurs at Indians. Bullshit. Slurs are hurled at South Indians in the North, and its a matter of education and then persons' merit which helps them get to a point where no slur sticks - Vinod Khosla is an example, as are countless Doctors, Professors, Professionals, and even me. So we have to be excellent not babied to be respected.

Enough of that as I wish to be a press baron myself - yeah, with you all as my board - at least 4 Sulekha friends I have and the other 2890 to follow as shareholders!

Seriously don't you think there should be another paper based on excellence in journalism - research, analysis, unbiased and unafraid reporting, and free of political affiliations, and not into pampering minorities and always painting anyone Hindu as a lout?

Why can't one be fun, open minded, into sports, fashion, travel, fine dining, good living and still be a devout Hindu? Why is a devout Hindu always held suspect of being an ignorant, fanatical, genocidal being? When Shahrukh Khan says his religion is the best he is applauded. When I say that I am condemned?

I don't - repeat DON'T - want to destroy mosques. I just don't want temples destroyed. What's wrong with that? I don't want to attack a Muslim's house, I also don't want trains and the Indian Parliament bombed. What's wrong with wanting to defend India? My issue is with those who preach hatred, what's wrong with hating hate mongers? It'd be nice to evolve to a point of not caring but then that's also shunning responsibility.

My Hindutva is my mukut (crown), my kavach (shield), my identity since the blood flowing in my veins and my DNA is Hindu from at least a 400 years. Same with Nidhi. It is also my place to be in times happy and sad, as that's my solace and celebration. It should only alarm those who wish to tread on me for my faith because I am not using it as arms, only spiritual armour.

Being a Hindu shouldn't be a cross to bear and a stance to defend. In Amsterdam and in London there are churches from 1600's which are now bars and clubs. Because many people are not into Christianity any more. If Hindus wish to follow that route that's their individual call and we can at some time in History talk of an ancient religion that once flourished from the time of Mohenjodaro till 2008 and then petered out because it was viewed as being un-hip at a time when Islam was flourishing, so Hindus packed and left. However I shan't be packing and leaving because my wife would leave me were I to leave Hinduism, besides despite years away the way Krishna and Hanuman resonate within me nothing does, and I find the Geeta to be a fantastic management guide - relevant in day to day tough situations, especially in negotiating and /or communicating.

On to the subject of the declining dollar. Rumor has it it will fall to Rs. 32! This per my CPA who has an offshore practice to process US tax returns in India. Declining dollar has hurt his business as he is now more expensive than he was, therefore less competitive. At 32 bucks he'll be even less desirably priced. So will that hurt Shining India? Before rushing into Indian economy is indestructible let's soberly look at Japan and also India's foreign reserves and plan a plan if those foreign reserves decline. And no EU isn't the US so can't offset US related losses totally - that's why I think and defer to your opinion.

Welcome was very funny, and I stick totally to that opinion. Nana Patekar stole the show, especially in that one scene when he swings around a pole with a love lorn look in his eyes. I'd say it's a must see.

Madhuri butchered her natural good looks with the new hairdo - straight hair and that color isn't her, but this isn't about that - it's about censorship in India.

Listen, censorship, muzzling opinions is for Sudan not India.

Saawariya - at home

Nidhi, Mama and I watched Saawariya.

That is why I am still humming "Saawariya" - okay I liked the song, but was scandalized that the hero flashes the world standing in an open window as we get an ass shot (shot of his ass, and not like his ass gets a bullet shot) through a translucent dhoti.

Mama made brilliant "rubri" to have while watching the movie. So it could be "rubri" or those fantastic "paranthas" we had earlier, but I have a feeling that the comatose feeling (while watching) was caused - at least a wee bit - by Saawariya - as food doesn't cause a glazed look, and a drained brain - but then the very blue, very strange sets and a boy who looks like Neetu Singh and a girl who looks like Anil Kapoor can do things, you know.

Don't convince us, please let us 3 convince you on that, about any artistic merits of this film as we've decided not to like it, because it was garish, senseless saga of two young people acting stupid - in the age of the Internet and MTv who acts and dresses like they do - geeks, nerds, anyone is better than those two foolish characters - at 20 or so one has to focus on studying, going somewhere in life, (and) not singing in a town in ruins where most people on the street are whores, and to pine away for a man after a one night stand, and to top it the man (who sings in a town full of whores) pines for an unemployed, not in school woman who is pining for a man whose room she went to, uninvited, for the whole night - that safety pin is symbolic of sex?

Why don't these guys just live in Pine Tress with all the pining they do - odd birds that they are they're fit to live in a tree...... a weird blue tree

SRK - A blog that rediff would not publish

Back in August, on the 13th to be exact, I wrote the following blog on rediff.com. A maelstrom ensued and within 12 hours the blog was deleted. Muslims were up in arms because I dared ask one of theirs if India or Islam came first, and liberal Hindus were aghast that I asked a Muslim such a question and because I asked I was branded a RSS/ VHP/ Hindu hardliner. A handful said "Go, man", but they too were shouted down. And many were just shocked that I dared question a super star.

NO ONE, repeat NO ONE, touched upon the interview that prompted the blog to start with. I haven't touched rediff since, as I have trouble handling loud mouth ignorants - one of whom definitely is that Thapar fella on TV.

Sulekha seems a much more refined crowd, so here it is again, with an assurance that I do not hate Muslims, just as I do not love Hindus - I just can't stand terrorists and their implicit and explicit backers.

Yesterday we thought about watching Chak De. Being in the USA/ Canada Bollywod films are one of our main connections with India.

Checking for movie reviews online we came across Shahrukh Khan's interview with Rajeev Masand in which Shahrukh Khan said that " I believe in the educated Islamic sect, I belong to it and educated Muslim people are the nicest people in the world. That is my religion and I would like to propagate that through my film without shoving it down your throat"

That made us curious about his general leanings, and especially since an Indian recently attacked Glasgow Airport in an Islamic terrorist attack India needs to know what does her leading Star think of Indians' involvement in Islamic Jihad.

Then we wondered since the extremist Mullahs are recruiting impressionable Muslims in the Netherlands, and France, UK, Pakistan and India preaching hate and violence under the garb of "Islam under threat" rhetoric, what does Shahrukh Khan have to say about India that has allowed him and other Muslims like Azim Premji, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Zakir Hussein, Dilip Kumar, Mansoor Ali Khan Patuadi, Vice President Ansari immense success? Why does he not tell the world that Islam is not under threat and that Muslims' talent and hard work is rewarded - even in a Hindu majority country.

Shahrukh Khan says he likes to propagate messages then why not propagate the message about leaving the walled cities, and coming out in to the open to seek modern education and be a part of a progressive society? Why not use his immense star appeal to propagate value of reason, objectivity, hard work, peace and emancipation to those vulnerable and in the clutches of criminal terrorist breeders?

As a public figure who owes his fame and wealth to his fans, majority of whom are Hindu - simply because his fan base is Indian and India is a Hindu majority country - he needs to clarify his stand on India and Islam, lest the Islamic hate mongers take his statement as support for their acts of terror and death to the innocent. And Hindus need to know how Shahrukh Khan balances his religion and patriotism so our questions are:

1. What is Shahrukh Khan's (SRK's) stand on and definition of Islamic Jihad
2. Why has SRK not used his image and immense reach to dispel lies about Islam under threat by telling the Muslim world about his own and the successes of other hard working Muslims in India and abroad.
3. What is SRK's position on destruction of Hindu temples by Muslim terrorists - at what point is there a justification to destroy a temple,
4. Why has SRK not taken a public stand against attacks on Indian Parliament and recent Mumbai Train blasts, and since he has not, in the event of an Al Qaeda attack against India or a war with Pakistan will he be a Muslim or an Indian first - simply put will he be for India or with India's Muslim enemies
5. Does Shahrukh Khan support India's demand for extradition of Dawood Ibrahim and does he also support India's stand on Kashmir

We as Indians and we as Hindus demand answers from him not only as a man who owes all he has to the Indian public but also to understand the mind of a member of the educated Islamic sect, as he calls himself.

And if SRK refuses to answer then we say that India and Hindus boycott his Films, Stage and TV shows until he tells us who he is as a man, Indian and Muslim.

We did. We have not gone for Chak De, and shan't spend our money or time till we know who we are spending our time and money on.

On Shanti Om

On a windy Saturday night Nidhi, her Mum and I went to see Om Shanti Om in Kirkland - no it's not the hometown of Captain Kirk.

The dark night hovered over dark lifeforms - including us 3 lest the reader take this as a racial remark. And a line of bobbing dark (haired) heads extended 20 yards - point is it was long - from the ticket window, in which sat Mishu - one of the owners, and a good guy, without whom there'd be no MasalaMovies in the Seattle metro area - accepting payments, printing tickets like a ticket machine (with a smile).

It was a full house. Full of young Indians, each comfortable, confident being who they were - quite evident that most were from India, hence devoid of visible confusion and audible accent that comes with being Indian of US origin.

Why these smart, hip people were watching a film starring a middle aged, janata (जनता), anything but hip or smart guy remains a mystery even right now, but enough of this!!

Then the show started. Roadside Romeo looks great, and puts another feather in the cap of Aditya Chopra - the man's vision is phenomenal, his courage amazing, and that starting with DDLJ he has reinvented Yashraj Films, his success matches the success of Shining India (I get carried away with stuff like that, so please let's not get me going about Kishore Biyani). Dus Kahaniyan seems interestingly gritty and Jodha Akbar is a stunning vast moving landscape shimmering with heat and light and people in armor and finery. Beautiful - should be India's entry in a foreign festival.

Om Shanti Om roared to a start with Rishi Kapoor as a singing prop (singing Om Shanti Om) to introduce our hero, and also to associate the name with a phenomenally popular tune. It's a very clever idea. Rishi Kappor rocked on a revolving record wearing a ridiculous white outfit that only he can carry (which I secretly wish to wear when Karz was released)

Then we meet the remaining populace of OSO - spunky, warm and funny mother, supporting, believing friend, and another prop - very pretty prop - Shanti played with required vacuousness by Deepika Padukone. She is very leggy, with a very nice tummy which isn't wash-board flat (Om's is - and artificially at that - meaning everything from surgery and ass breaking work-out), and a sculpted face (Shanti's) with prominent cheekbones, big dark eyes, and a nice full mouth.

So stuff happens, Om is quite boring - when he asks a billboard if it/ she billboard is bored I wanted to say, "fuckin' bored man, and frankly you sound retarded talking in public in broad day light to a billboard".

Point is Om is an aspiring actor, product of aspiring actors (one since deceased), in love with a top Star. Friend and Mother encourage his foolish fantasies with doses of realism like changing his name. Then Om saves Shanti from a burning set, and goes on to sing a song to her in a massive movie set which he can't afford, but reality this is a movie - point is by this time:

sets are ugly
music is passe
AND
choreography is mundane - what the fuck? It's a film directed by India's top choreographer and she isn't doing Chhaiya Chhaiya here?

Then Om cannot save Shanti from another burning movie set, set on fire by a man who when on screen with our Om is a great comparison in acting and over acting - okay no one is saying Arjun Rampal is a Robert De Niro or even Keshto Mukerjee - but he displayes an economy of expression whereas Shahrukh Khan goes into paroxysm of facial twitches, most unattractive of which is the droopy smile which makes his lower lip look massive.

Shanti dies, Om does too, the movie continues. By this time some people including my Sweetest Darling has found much mirth in the scene where Om is playing (man who can't pay his chai bill, rents another studio locale and extras to play an actor to impress Shanti - but it's a movie so let's go along with it) - though "naughty pussy" was funny.

Then Om is reborn. Looks 39 acts 19. Then without rhyme or reason he takes his shirt off and keeps it off while women throw water at him in buckets. So we see his abs, pity did not get to see the glutes.

By this time its evident that this is a vehicle to re brand SRK as a sexy, macho male of Bollywood. Deepika is a prop, sets are a prop, even dancing is, nothing can take viewers' attention away from his body, his face, his dialogue delivery - nothing, His wife didn't produce this for nothing. This is to pit SRK against Salman and Hritik who have monopolized baring bulging chests and biceps giving many an Indian women a naughty thrill down there. So its SRK's turn to turn sexy - he's not a middle class guy with lower middle class looks but a raging sex symbol with an amazing body which we get to see lots of times - wet, shining body too. And what a great present to give oneself - a sexy image. Though he is quite unintelligent when it comes to talking and acting (behaving included).

By this time new Om has found he is old Om so finds old Mum and Buddy and wants to avenge Shanti's death, and luckily the killer is still alive and within reach so drama begins to snare him (killer) in a trap of bad, garish sets, bad costumes and mediocre score. Bad man is smart but is outsmarted by super natural so is not only trapped but also killed. Then, oh yes, the new Shanti now called Sandy is either laid or laid off by Om and family (I don't remember).

Only redeeming feature of the film is the opening and the closing in which the crew got to make an appearance. Most irritating part of the film is Om - overly overacting in 2nd part.

Someone should tell him that baring chests doesn't make stars. Fabio is good for that. DeNiro, Brando, Hoffman and Bachchan are made with talent, and an image that doesn't erode with age because they find scripts that allow them to act their age.

Imagine Nicholson acting 40? Now why does SRK act 20 or early 30 something? And why would anyone want to watch that?

I did because Nidhi wanted to see what the buzz was about, and I'm glad we did because despite bad script, direction, music and sets Om Shanti Om works because it feels different - it feels like a new type of a movie - not Bheja Fry, but still new.

On that note WATCH BHEJA FRY.

Lack of Remorse Indian Style

Mel Gibson goes on his knees apologizing pillar to post for his drunken comments about the Jews, Bill Clinton asked for the nation's forgiveness for his Monica tryst, Corporate Plunderers tell America how sorry they are for robbing their corporations. And its not only the US. Japanese say sorry to Chinese, Germany to families of holocaust victims. The point is when caught people say sorry and are or pretend to be remorseful, embarrassed, chastised and generally give the appearance of wanting to change or having reformed.

But in India, being rich and famous or being the fruit of loins of rich and famous means being a criminal and flaunting it.

Sanjay Dutt should've given a good part of his earnings to the Bombay blast victims - actually civil cases should've made him bankrupt by now - and asked India's forgiveness for hobnobbing with the worst types of criminals - traitors and enemies of India.

Salman Khan ran over some poor homeless sleeping on the roads of Bombay, confirming that the poor who had no dignity also have no safety, even on Government property. Then he goes and shoots an endangered species. So neither people nor wildlife is safe from this man.

The BMW drivers in Delhi who mowed down people don't seem to be doing their acts of penance, nor does Manu Sharma appear in public preaching against violent drunkenness.

And why should they when the society - fans, the press - coddle them? Instead of outrage India feels badly for Munna Bhai and Prem, when the thoughts should be for the victims. If the actors' movies were shunned they would leap to reform, but both men are raking in huge money because the press doesn't ask for a boycott of their films, and the fans, average Indians, don't care about morality. Therefore more people like them will kill at will and mix with killers without fears, which will make criminals stronger because they have celebrity (powerful) friends.

It is a malaise of the Indian soul, perhaps a moral and ethical impotence borne of being a slave nation since about 1100 AD, not to seek and expect justice.

Dawood Ibrahim has waged a war of terror against India yet India has not put a reward on his head, nor pushed hard for his extradition. Saddam Hussein and his sons were turned by a reward seeker, so rewards work, so why is India not aggressively getting him.

Star TV reported Abu Salem's assets in the US but have those assets been confiscated, and in the meanwhile who is paying for his legal defence?

No one is safe if India allows these men to act in these heinous ways, and India Shining means accountability and responsibility at all levels at all times, otherwise the Shine gets tarnished.

In a country where the enemies of the India and Indians within and without run amok without fear of retribution there needs an awakening, which simply means saying, "enough, no more bullshit"

And it starts with rejecting idiot fodder called Newspapers unless one admits being an idiot and needing sustenance from them daily - non idiots may like Punjab Kesari and India Today. And it continues with rejecting en-masse politicians with criminal records and lack of public and professional performance record.

Idiot Fodder

Yesterday I read this column by Jitesh Pillai in Flimfare in which he suggests that Aditya Chopra hand over the creative aspects of Yash Raj Films to his father since "film making is not marketing"and since Pillai wants more movies like Dharmaputra, Silsila, Deewar etc.

Pillai misses the intensity and the poetry and things like that of the past Yash Raj Films.

Jitesh also sounds like an idiot for writing a column without analyzing Aditya Chopra's trailblazing role in redefining YRF and Indian cinema in general. And his editor for allowing that column to be printed shows the moribund, irrelevant to modern India face of TOI - in the world of digg.com and blogs investigative reporting based on real analyses is pretty much required to remain alive.

Saathiya, Dhooom, Neal n' Nikki, Bunty aur Bubli, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom - all pushed the envelope farther and reinvented the genre - without lecherous villians, evil mothers-in-law, ever suffering daughters-in-law - and showed India as an modern, fun, intelligent nation.

The current YRF talent pool is brimming with Gulzar, Shaad Ali, Siddharth Anand, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and contains probably the brightest of Bollywood talent.

Aditya Chopra is a visionary film maker and business man - as investment bankers and investors will attest. And along with Kishore Biyani he is the leading edge of Indian creative excellence.

Compared to other film studios and film families YRF stands as far apart as does Big Bazaar from the neighborhood "baniya".

Obviously Pillai and his editors are no part of the intelligent, forward thinking, outward looking, new India. His India is made of tear jerkers and melodramas and basically lives in a world that the world has said goodbye to.

This is the world of the individual, and a strong individual. Aditya Chopra's films are made for that individual - Salaam Namaste is a film of today, not Silsila. And in the real world of Web 2.0 of working adults not stifled by the hypocrisy of Indian conservatism who gives a fuck to an illegitimate kid? It's time to look at bigger more important things, and also films are nice if they are fun - movies like Dhoom, which Pillai doesn't like.

News is responsible business based on responsible analysis. In case of this article there was nothing responsible, just emotional, biased tirade, unless Filmfare last page is an opinion page written by a writer with poor writing and research skills.

And Hindus need to know how Shahrukh Khan balances his religion and patriotism so our questions are:

1. What is Shahrukh Khan's (SRK's) stand on and definition of Islamic Jihad
2. Why has SRK not used his image and immense reach to dispel lies about Islam under threat by telling the Muslim world about his own and the successes of other hard working Muslims in India and abroad.
   
3. What is SRK's position on destruction of Hindu temples by Muslim terrorists - at what point is there a justification to destroy a temple,
4. Why has SRK not taken a public stand against attacks on Indian Parliament and recent Mumbai Train blasts, and since he has not, in the event of an Al Qaeda attack against India or a war with Pakistan will he be a Muslim or an Indian first - simply put will he be for India or with India's Muslim enemies
   
5. Does Shahrukh Khan support India's demand for extradition of Dawood Ibrahim and does he also support India's stand on Kashmir

We as Indians and we as Hindus demand answers from him not only as a man who owes all he has to the Indian public but also to understand the mind of a member of the educated Islamic sect, as he calls himself.

And if SRK refuses to answer then we say that India and Hindus boycott his Films, Stage and TV shows until he tells us who he is as a man, Indian and Muslim.

We did. We have not gone for Chak De, and shan't spend our money or time till we know who we are spending our time and money on.
